What is a doula anyway?
The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. I want to be a midwife, a doula is the same, right?
No, the role of a midwife is hugely different than the role of a doula. Put simply a midwife is a mother's Care Provider, they are the ones to look after the medical side of the birth and ensure everyone stays healthy. A doula is there for support only. The doula will not fulfill a medical role in any way. Midwives and doulas have different, but complementary roles.
Is it possible to make a living as a doula?
Yes! it will take planning but it is possible. We will talk about this extensively during the workshop.
Yes! Strong family support and backup will be essential. We will help you put plans in place.
Can I doula with small children?
Yes! Every doula practice is different, you can tailor yours to meet your needs.
Can I be a doula while working another job?
Of course! There are many tools out there that will complement your medical role as a nurse. We can help you build your emotional support and comfort measure toolbox.
I'm a nurse, would a doula training benefit me?
We welcome breastfeeding families! We ask that older babies have a caregiver that can bring baby to you on breaks. To ensure an optimal learning environment for all participants, we ask that you step out of the room if necessary.
Can I bring my baby to the workshop?
We are here to support you through this journey. We work hard to meet your needs. Everything is outlined in the registration form. Can't find it, or have more questions? Contact Us and we'll talk.
Can I make payments to attend a workshop?
You are not the only one! We are well-versed in all learning styles and have created our workshops to meet all learning needs. If there is something specific you need, just let us know.
I find it difficult in a classroom, sitting for long periods and staying focused.
Yes! There are some specifics as to how combining services works. We will guide you through the process during the workshop.
I would like to combine my doula services with other skills. Is that possible?
You will be ready to begin your doula life as soon as you complete the workshop. As part of your workshop, continuing support and guidance will be provided. You will receive ongoing mentorship, and will be connected with the strong community of Doula Essentials-trained doulas. At Doula Essentials, we are committed to helping you succeed.
